Surat e Ghafir English Translation

  1. Ḥâ-Mĩm.
  2. The revelation of this book is from God the Mighty and the Mighty.
  3. He who forgives sins and accepts repentance and punishes severely and is merciful.  There is no god but Him.
  4. Those who dispute in the verses of God are those who disbelieve.  So do not let the waking of these people in the cities deceive you.
  5. The people of Noah before them and the peoples after them also denied (the prophets). And every nation made this intention about their Prophet, that they should seize him, and they quarreled foolishly (with Shahbat) in order to deprive him of the truth, so I seized them (so see) how was my punishment.
  6. And in the same way, the word of your Lord has been fulfilled about the disbelievers, that they are the people of Hell.
  7. Those who carry the Throne and those who surround it (i.e. the angels) glorify their Lord with praise and seek forgiveness for the believers.  O our Lord, Your mercy and Your knowledge cover everything, so forgive those who repent and follow Your path and save them from the punishment of Hell.
  8. O our Lord, admit them into the Gardens of eternal abiding whom You have promised them, and also those who are more righteous among their fathers and their wives and their children.  Verily, He is the Mighty in wisdom.
  9. And protect them from punishment.  And whomsoever Thou savest from the chastisement on that Day, then indeed Thou hast mercy on him, and that is a great success.
  10. Those who disbelieved will be called out and told that when you were called to faith (in the world) and did not believe, God was disgusted more than you are disgusted with yourselves.
  11. They will say, O our Lord, you killed us twice and gave us life twice.  If we confess our sins, is there any way out?
  12. This is because when God alone was called upon, you refused.  And if he was appointed as a partner with him, he would have accepted it, so the ruling belongs to God, who is (highest) and (highest).
  13. It is He Who shows you His signs and sends down upon you sustenance from the sky.  And only he who turns (towards) the admonition gets hold of it.
  14. So purify the worship of God and call upon Him, even if the disbelievers believe badly.
  15. He is the Lord of the Most High and the Lord of the Throne.  To whomsoever of His servants He wills, He sends revelations by His command, so as to warn them of the Day of Meeting.
  16. On the day they leave, nothing of them will be hidden from God.  Whose kingdom is today?  Of God who is alone and mighty.
  17. Today everyone will be rewarded for his deeds. Today there will be no injustice (in favor of anyone).  Verily, God is quick to take account.
  18. And warn them of the coming day when their hearts will be filled with grief up to their throats. (And) the wrongdoers will have no friend and no intercessor whose words will be accepted.
  19. He knows the treachery of the eyes and what is hidden in the breasts.
  20. And God commands with truth, and those whom these people call upon cannot command anything.  Indeed, God is Hearing (and) Seeing.
  21. Did they not roam the earth to see what happened to those before them?  They were far superior to them in strength and (making) signs in the land, so God caught them because of their sins.  And there was no one to save them from God.
  22. This is because the Prophet used to bring clear proofs to them, so they disbelieved, so God caught them.  Verily, He is the Mighty (and the Severe Punisher).
  23. And We sent Musa with Our signs and clear evidence.
  24. (That is) towards Pharaoh, Haman and Qarun, they said: This is a sorcerer and a liar.
  25. Therefore, when they came to them with the truth from us, they said: Kill the sons of those who have believed with him (in God) and let the daughters live.  And the plans of the disbelievers are to be thwarted.
  26. And Pharaoh said, “Leave me to kill Moses, and let him call upon his Lord.”  I am afraid that he will not (say) change your religion or create disorder in the country.
  27. Musa said: I am against every arrogant person who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning (i.e. Resurrection).  I have taken refuge in myself and your Lord.
  28. And one of Pharaoh’s people, a believer who kept his faith hidden, said, “Do you want to kill a person who says, ‘My Lord is God,’ and he has brought signs from your Lord?”  .  And if he is a liar, his lie will harm him.  And if it is true, then some punishment that He promises you will befall you.  Indeed, God does not guide a person who is a blatant liar.
  29. O nation, today is your kingdom and you are the dominant in the country.  (But) if the chastisement of God befalls us, who will help us (to remove it)?  Fir’aun said: “I tell you what has come to me and I tell you the way that is good.”
  30. So he who was a believer said: O people, I am afraid of you, lest the punishment of a day similar to that of the nations should come upon you.
  31. That is) like the condition of Noah’s people and ‘Ad and Thamud and those who came after them (do not become your situation), and God does not want to oppress his servants.
  32. And O people, I am afraid of you on the Day of Call (i.e. Resurrection).
  33. On the day you turn your backs and flee (from the Day of Resurrection), there will be no one to protect you from God.  And whoever God leads astray, there is no one to guide him.
  34. Yusuf also came to you earlier with signs, so you were always in doubt about what he brought.  Even when he died, you said that God will never send a prophet after him.  Similarly, God misleads the transgressor and doubter.
  35. Those who dispute the verses of God without any proof having come to them.  This dispute is highly disliked by God and believers.  In the same way, God seals the heart of every arrogant rebel.
  36. And Pharaoh said, Haman, build me a palace so that I may reach the roads.
  37. (i.e.) on the paths of the heavens, then look at the God of Moses and I consider him a liar.  And in the same way Pharaoh knew his deeds were bad and good and he was stopped from the path.  And Pharaoh’s strategy was useless.                                                                 And the person who was a believer said: Brothers, follow me and I will show you the path of goodness.
  38. Brothers, this life of the world (for a few days) is something to take advantage of.  And that which is hereafter is the home of eternal living.
  39. Whoever does evil will be repaid accordingly.  And whoever does good deeds, whether a man or a woman, and he is also a believer, such people will enter Paradise, where they will receive abundant sustenance.
  40. And what is my condition, O people, that I call you to salvation and you call me to the fire (of hell)?
  41. You call me to disbelieve in God and associate with Him that which I know nothing about.
  42. And I call you (God) to the Mighty (and) Forgiving.
  43. The truth is that what you are calling me to is not capable of being called in this world and the hereafter (i.e. accepting supplication), and we must return to God, and those who transgress are the inmates of hell.
  44. You will remember what I tell you going forward.  And I entrust my work to God.  Verily, God sees the servants.
  45. Therefore, God kept Moses safe from the evils of these people’s plans and afflicted Pharaoh’s people with an evil punishment.
  46. (Namely) the Fire (hell) that is presented to him in the morning and evening.  And on the Day of Resurrection (the command will be that) admit Pharaoh’s people into a severe punishment.
  47. And when they quarrel in hell, the lowly people will say to the great men: We were your subjects, so can you remove some part of the hell (punishment) from us?
  48. The big men will say that you (and) we (also) will all (live) in Hell. God has decided among His servants.
  49. And those who will be (burning) in the Fire will say to the liars of Hell: Pray to your Lord that He may lighten the punishment from us one day.
  50. They will say, “Didn’t your Prophet come to you with signs?” They will say why not, then they will say that you should pray.  And the supplication of the disbelievers (on that day) will be in vain.
  51. We help Our Messengers and those who have believed in the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses stand (i.e. on the Day of Resurrection).
  52. (52) The Day on which their forgiveness will not avail the wrongdoers, and for them will be a curse and an evil abode.
  53. And We gave Musa (the Book of) guidance and made the Children of Israel inherit the Book.
  54. There is guidance and advice for the wise.
  55. So be patient, verily God’s promise is true, and seek forgiveness for your sins, and glorify your Lord morning and evening with praise.
  56. Those who dispute the verses of God without any proof that has come to them have nothing but greatness in their hearts and they are not about to reach it, so seek refuge with God.  Verily, He is the Hearing (and) the Seeing.
  57. The creation of the heavens and the earth is greater (work) than the creation of people, but most people do not know.
  58. And the blind and the sighted are not equal.  And neither the righteous nor the wicked (are equal) who believe (the truth is) you think very little.
  59. Doomsday is coming, there is no doubt.  But most people do not believe
  60. And your Lord has said that you pray to Me and I will accept your (prayer).  Those who are proud of my worship.  Soon they will enter hell humiliated.
  61. It is God who made the night for you to rest in it and made the day bright (to work in it).  But most people do not give thanks.
  62. This God is your Lord who is the creator of everything.  There is no god but Him, then where are you wandering?
  63. Similarly, those who denied the revelations of God were going astray.
  64. It is God who made the earth a resting place for you and the sky a roof and made your forms and made them good and gave you pure things to eat.  This God is your Lord.  So, God, the Lord of the worlds, is very blessed.
  65. He is alive (who has no death) and there is no one worthy of worship except Him, so call upon Him by purifying His worship.  All praise is due to God, the Lord of all the worlds.
  66. Say (O Muhammad ﷺ to them): I am forbidden to worship those whom you call upon besides God (and how shall I worship them) while I have from my Lord (from)  Clear arguments have come and I have been commanded to obey the command of the Lord of the worlds.
  67. It is He Who created you (first) from dust.  After making a sperm, then making a clot, then it takes you out (that you are) a child, then you reach your youth.  Then you get old.  And one of you dies early and you reach the appointed time (of death) and so that you may understand.
  68. He is the one who burns and kills.  Then when he wants to do something (and give birth to someone), he tells him that if it is done, then he goes.
  69. Have you not seen those who dispute in the verses of God?  Where are they wandering?
  70. Those who denied the Book (God) and what We sent down to the Messengers.  They will soon find out.
  71. While there will be collars and chains around their necks (and) they will be dragged.
  72. (ie) in boiling water.  Then they will be thrown into the fire.
  73. Then it will be said to them: Where are those whom you used to associate (with God)?
  74. They (i.e. non-God) will say that they kept going away from us, but we did not call for anything before.  In the same way God leads the unbelievers astray.
  75. This is the recompense of that which you used to rejoice in the earth without the truth (i.e. against it) and that you used to bring it down (punishment).
  76. (Now) enter the gates of hell.  Will always be in it.  What a bad abode for the arrogant.
  77. So (O Prophet) be patient, God’s promise is true.  If We show you some of that which We promise you.  (i.e. send down punishment on the disbelievers) or complete your lifetime, then they must return to Us.
  78. And We sent (many) Messengers before you.  There are some of them whose conditions have been explained to you and some of them whose conditions have not been explained.  And no prophet was able to bring any sign except by God’s command.  Then when God’s command came, the decision was made with justice and the people of falsehood fell into loss.
  79. It is God Who has made for you beds so that you may ride on some of them and some of them you may eat.
  80. And there are (also) benefits in them for you, and also so that you (climb on them and reach there) whatever your heart’s desire (to go somewhere).  And you ride on them and on boats.
  81. And He shows you His signs, so you will not believe in some of God’s signs.
  82. Did they not wander the earth to see what happened to those before them?  (Although) they were more powerful than them and far superior in (making) signs in the earth.  So what they used to do was of no use to them.
  83. And when their messengers came to them with clear signs, they began to reveal to them what knowledge (they thought) they had, and that which they used to mock surrounded them.
  84. Then when they saw our punishment, they said, “We believed in God alone and disbelieved in what we used to associate with Him.”
  85. But when they saw Our punishment (at that time), their faith did not avail them anything.  (This is) God’s custom (about) His servants.  And there the disbelievers fell into the abyss.
