Surah Al Ahzab English Translation

  1. O Prophet, keep fearing God and do not obey the words of the infidels and hypocrites.  Indeed, God is All-Knowing and All-Wise.
  2. And follow what (the Book) is revealed to you from your Lord.  Indeed, God is aware of all your actions.
  3. And trust in God.  And God alone is sufficient
  4. God has not made two hearts in a man’s side.  And did not make your women, whom you call mothers, your mothers, nor did you make your guardians your sons.  These are all the words of your mouth.  And God speaks the truth and He guides the straight path.
  5. Believers!  Call the guardians by their (real) fathers’ names.  That this is true in the eyes of God.  If you do not know the names of their fathers, they are your brothers and friends in religion, and there is no sin on you in what happened to you by mistake.  But what you do intentionally (there is an impeachment), and God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
  6.  The Prophet has more rights over the believers than their lives, and the wives of the Prophet are their mothers.  And according to the Book of Allah, relatives are more entitled to each other than the Muslims and the emigrants.  But you want to do favors to your friends.  (So there is another thing).  This order has been written in the book (Qur’an).
  7. And when We took a covenant with the prophets and with you, with Noah, and with Abraham, and with Moses, and with Jesus, the son of Mary.  And also made a covenant with them.
  8. So that He may inquire of those who speak the truth about their truthfulness, and He has prepared for the disbelievers a painful punishment.
  9. Believers, remember the favor of God that (He) showed you (when) the armies came (to attack) you.  So We sent upon them the wind and (sent down) armies which you could not see.  And God is watching what you do.
  10. When they came upon you from above and below you, and when the eyes turned and the hearts (of terror) reached the throats, and you began to think in various ways about God.
  11. There the believers were tested and severely shaken.
  12. And when the hypocrites and those whose hearts are diseased said, “Allah and His Messenger only promised us a lie.”
  13. And when a group of them used to say: O People of Madinah (here is no place for you to stay), then go back.  And a group of them asked permission from the Prophet and said that our houses are open even though they were not open.  They just wanted to run away.
  14. And if (armies) come upon them from the sides of Madinah, then they are asked for a civil war, then they should (immediately) start doing it and pause for it very little.
  15. Although he had previously confessed to God that he would not turn back.  And there will certainly be a question from God (of what is) confessed.

Say: If you run away from death or being killed, running away will not benefit you, and you will benefit very little at that time.

  1. Say: If God intends evil for you, who can save you from it, or if He wishes to be kind to you, who can remove it?  nor a helper.
  2. God knows those among you who forbid (people) and say to their brothers, Come to us.  And they do not come to battle but less.
  3. God knows those among you who forbid (people) and say to their brothers, Come to us.  And they do not come to battle but less.
  4. (This is because) they are stingy about you.  Then when (the time of) fear comes, you see them looking at you (and) their eyes are moving (like) someone who is afraid of death.  Then when the fear goes away, speak about you with sharp tongues and miserly in wealth.  These people did not (actually) believe, so God destroyed their deeds.  And this was easy for God.
  5.  (Because of fear) they think that the armies have not gone.  And if the armies come, wish them to stay in the Gunwars (and) ask for your news.  And if they are among you, then do not fight but less.
  6. It is better for you to follow the Messenger of God (i.e.) that person who has hope of (meeting) God and the Day of Judgment (coming) and who remembers God often.
  7. And when the believers saw the army (of the disbelievers), they said: This is what God and His Messenger promised us, and God and His Messenger spoke the truth.  And by this their faith and obedience increased even more.
  8. How many people are there among the believers who made the confession they made to God come true?  So there are some among them who have completed their vows and there are others who are waiting and they have not changed (their words) in the slightest.
  9. So that God will reward the truthful for their truthfulness and punish the hypocrites if He wills and show mercy to them if He wills.  Indeed, God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
  10. And those who disbelieved, God turned them away, in their anger (they were filled) they could not achieve any good.  And God had had enough of the believers fighting.  And God is Mighty (and) Mighty.
  11. And those of the People of the Book who had helped them dislodged them from their strongholds and put terror in their hearts.  So how many would you kill and how many would you imprison?
  12. And made you inherit their land and their houses and their possessions and the land in which you have not set foot.  And God has power over all things.
  13. O Prophet, tell your wives that if you desire the life of this world and its adornments, then let me give you some wealth and give you a good farewell.
  14. And if you seek God and His Messenger and the Home of the Hereafter (i.e. Paradise), then God has prepared a great reward for those among you who do good.
  15. O wives of the Prophet, whosoever among you will make a clear indecent act (to hurt the Messenger of Allah by saying words).  He will be punished twice.  And this is easy for God.
  16. And whoever among you obeys God and His Messenger and does good deeds.  We will give him a double reward, and We have prepared for him a provision of honor.
  17. O wives of the Prophet, you are not like other women.  If you want to be pious, do not speak softly to a stranger, so that he who has some kind of disease in his heart does not develop hope.  And speak in accordance with these rules.
  18. And stay in your homes and do not show off your adornment as you used to show off in (the days of) ignorance.  And continue to pray and continue to give alms and obey God and His Messenger.  O (Prophet’s) Ahl al-Bayt, God wants to remove impurity from you and purify you completely.
  19. And remember the verses of God that are recited in your homes and the words of wisdom.  Indeed, God is Subtle and Aware.
  20. (Those who bow their heads in obedience to God i.e.) Muslim men and Muslim women and believing men and believing women and obedient men and obedient women and righteous men and righteous women and patient men and patient women.  Women and men who humble themselves and women who humble themselves and men who give charity and women who give charity and men who fast and women who fast and men who protect their private parts and women who protect themselves and God in abundance.  Missing men and frequently missing women.  There is no doubt that God has prepared forgiveness and a great reward for them.
  21.  And no believing man or believing woman has the right that when God and His Messenger have decreed something, they should consider their own authority in this matter.  And whoever disobeys God and His Messenger has gone astray.
  22. And when you used to say to the person on whom God showed favor and you also showed favor (that) let his wife stay with him and fear God, and you used to hide in your hearts that which God would reveal.  Was there and you were afraid of people.  Although God is more deserving of being feared.  Then when Zayd did not have (any) need (related to) her (i.e. divorced her), We gave her in marriage to you, so that for the believers their mouths may speak (about the marriage of their sons with their wives).  ) When they do not keep their needs (related) to them (i.e. give divorce), there should be no hardship.  And God’s order was about to come to pass.
  23. There is no restriction on the Prophet in the work that God has appointed for him.  And this has been God’s decree in those who have passed away before.  And God’s order has been established.
  24. And those who convey God’s message (as they are) and fear it, and fear none but God.  And God alone is sufficient to reckon with.
  25. Muhammad (peace be upon him) is not the father of any of your men, but is the Messenger of God and the seal (i.e. the one who ends it) of the Prophets (Prophethood), and God is All-Knowing.
  26. O people of faith, remember God a lot.
  27. And recite its purity in the morning and in the evening.
  28. It is He Who sends mercy upon you and His angels.  To bring you out of the darkness and into the light.  And God is Merciful to the believers.
  29. On the day they meet Him, their gift (from God) will be greetings, and He has prepared for them a great reward.
  30. O Prophet, We have sent you as a witness and a bearer of glad tidings and a warner.
  31. And a call to God and a bright lamp.
  32. And give glad tidings to the believers that there will be a great bounty from God for them.
  33. And do not listen to the disbelievers and hypocrites and do not look at their suffering and put your trust in God.  And God alone is Sufficient.
  34. Believers!  When you marry believing women and divorce them before touching them (i.e. going to them), then you have no authority to make them complete the `iddah.  Give them some benefit (i.e. expense) and send them off well.
  35. O Prophet, We have made lawful for you your wives whom you have given as their dowries, and your concubines whom God has given you (as booty from the disbelievers), and the daughters of your uncles, and the daughters of your paternal aunts, and your  The daughters of your uncles and the daughters of your aunts who have left the country with you (all are permissible) and a believing woman if she forgives the Prophet (i.e. wants to marry without taking a dowry) provided that the Prophet also marries them.  If you want (it is also halal, but) this permission (O Muhammad ﷺ) is only for you and not for all Muslims.  We know that what We have fixed for their wives and concubines is so that you do not suffer any hardship.  And God is Forgiving, Merciful.
  36. (And you also have the right to) separate the wife you want and keep the one you want.  And if you call him back to you whom you separated, then there is no sin on you.  This (permission) is so that their eyes remain cool and they do not grieve, and whatever you give them.  Everyone should be happy about it.  And God knows what is in your hearts.  And God is All-Knowing, Forbearing.
  37. (O Prophet) You are not permitted to have other wives besides them, nor should you leave these wives and take other wives, no matter how good their beauty pleases you, except those who are the property of your hand (i.e. regarding the concubines).  (I have power over you) and God watches over all things.
  38. Believers, do not go to the Prophet’s houses unless you are allowed to eat and do not have to wait for it to be cooked.  But when you are invited, go, and when you have eaten, go and do not sit still in conversation.  This thing hurts the Prophet.  And they are ashamed of you (and do not say) but God is not ashamed to speak the truth.  And when you ask for something from the wives of the prophets, ask outside the veil.  It is a matter of great purity for both your hearts and theirs.  And it is not for you to hurt the Messenger of God, nor to marry his wives after him.  Verily, this is a great (deed of sin) in the sight of God.
  39. If you reveal something or conceal it, (remember that) God is Aware of everything.
  40. There is no sin on women from their fathers, nor from their sons, nor from their brothers, nor from their nephews, nor from their nieces, nor from their own women, nor from their concubines.  And (O women) fear God.  Verily, God is Aware of all things.
  41. God and His angels bless the Prophet.  Believers, send blessings and peace upon them.
  42.  Those who hurt God and His Messenger, God curses them in this world and the Hereafter, and He has prepared for them a humiliating punishment.
  43. And those who persecute the believing men and believing women (by slandering them) which they have not done, they have placed upon themselves the burden of slander and manifest sin.
  44. O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the women of the Muslims that (if they go out) they should hang a veil over their (faces) and take them.  This will be a matter of recognition (wamtiaz) for them, then no one will harm them.  And God is Forgiving, Merciful.
  45. If the hypocrites and those whose hearts are diseased and those who spread bad news (in the city of Madinah) do not desist (from their actions), then We will put you behind them, then not in your neighborhood there.  Will be able to stay but a few days.
  46. They too) exploded.  Where they were found, they were captured and put to death.
  47. God has had the same habit with those who have gone before.  And you will not be able to change the habit of God.
  48. People ask you about the Day of Resurrection (when it will come), say that only God knows.  And what do you know, maybe the Day of Resurrection is near.
  49. Indeed, God has cursed the disbelievers and has prepared for them the Fire (of Hell).
  50. Will live in it forever.  They will not find any friend or helper.
  51. On the Day when their faces will be turned upside down in the Fire, they will say, O that we had obeyed God and obeyed the command of the Messenger (God).
  52. And they will say: O our Lord, we obeyed the orders of our chiefs and great people, but they led us astray from the path.
  53. O our Lord, punish them with a double punishment and curse them greatly.
  54. Believers, do not be like those who caused Musa (blasphemy) grief, then God proved them blameless.  And they were honorable in the sight of God.
  55. Believers, be afraid of God and speak the truth.
  56. He will correct your deeds and forgive your sins.  And whoever obeys God and His Messenger, he will surely find a great purpose.
  57. We presented the trust to the heavens and the earth, but they refused to bear it and were afraid of it.  And the man picked it up.  Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant.
  58. So that God may punish hypocrite men and hypocrite women and polytheist men and polytheist women, and may God have mercy on believing men and believing women.  And God is Forgiving, Merciful.
