Surah Al Ahqaf, the 46th Surah of the Holy Quran, is a profound testament to the power of Allah. It serves as a stark reminder to the disbelievers of the consequences of rejecting Allah’s message. Surah Al Ahqaf was revealed in Makkah upon Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) return from Kaif. The name ‘Ahqaf’ in English means ‘THE WIND CURVED SANDHILLS,’ a reference to the challenging dunes and winding sand paths that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his Companions traversed during their journey to the Land of Ahqaf.

Surat E Ahqaf English Translation

  1. Ḥâ-Mĩm.
  2. (This) Book has been revealed by God, the Almighty (and) the Wise.
  3. We have created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them by wisdom and for an appointed time.  And they turn away from what the disbelievers are advised to do.
  4. Say, “Have you seen the things that you call besides God? Show me what they have created in the earth.”  Or their participation in the heavens.  If you are truthful, bring me a book earlier than this.  Or if something (transmitted) comes from knowledge (of the Prophets), (then present it)
  5. And who can be more misguided than a person who calls out to someone who will not be able to answer him until the Day of Resurrection, and who is not aware of their calling.
  6. And when the people are gathered together, they will be their enemies and will refuse to worship them.
  7. And when Our clear verses are recited before them, the unbelievers, when it comes to them, say that this is clear magic.
  8. Do they say that he made it by himself?  Say: If I have created it on my own behalf, then you have no authority before God for me (to save).  He knows very well the conversation you have about him.  He is sufficient witness between me and you.  And He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
  9. Say that I am not a new prophet.  And I do not know what will be done to me and what will be done to you. I follow that which is revealed to me, and my task is to guide openly.
  10. Say: Look, if this (Qur’an) is from God and you deny it, and a witness from among the children of Israel testifies to a similar (book) and believes, and you disobey.  So what is the doubt that you are cruel).  Verily, God does not guide the wrongdoers.
  11. And the unbelievers say to the believers that if this (religion) were any better, these people would not have rushed to it before us, and when they were not guided by it, they will now say that it is an old lie.
  12. And before that was the Book of Moses (for the people) a guide and a mercy.  And this book is in the Arabic language to confirm it so as to frighten the wrongdoers.  And give glad tidings to the righteous.
  13. Those who say: Our Lord is God, then they remain steadfast (on Him), they will have no fear, nor will they grieve.
  14. These are the people of Paradise who will live in it forever.  (This is) the reward for what they used to do.
  15. And We commanded man to be kind to his parents.  His mother held him in her womb with pain and he was born with pain.  And it stays in the stomach and leaves milk in two and a half years.  Even when he is very young and reaches the age of forty, he says: O my Lord, grant me the grace to be grateful for the favors You have bestowed on me and my parents and to do good deeds.  Whom you like.  And give advice (and piety) to my children for me.  I turn to You and I am among the obedient.
  16. These are the people whose good deeds We will accept and forgive their sins, and (they will be) among the people of Paradise.  (This is) a true promise that is made to them.
  17. And the person who said to his parents, “Whoah!”  You tell me that I shall be taken out (from the earth) even though many have passed before me.  And both of them were crying in the name of God (saying) that the less fortunate should believe.  God’s promise is true.  So he said, these are the stories of the first people.
  18. These are the people about whom the promise of chastisement was fulfilled among the (other) nations of the jinn and the humans who had passed before them.  Indeed, they were the losers.
  19. And according to the deeds done by the people, there will be ranks of all.  The purpose is to reward them in full for their deeds and not harm them.
  20. And on the day when the unbelievers will be brought before the Hellfire, (it will be said that) you have obtained pleasures in the life of this world and enjoyed them, so today you have the punishment of humiliation, (this is) the punishment (of it) that  What were you unjustly proud of in the earth?  And used to do evil to him.
  21. And remember the brother of (the nation) Aad (Hud) that when he guided his people in the land of Ahqaf, and those who guided before and behind him had passed, that you should worship none but God.  I fear for you the punishment of the Great Day.
  22. They said: Have you come to us to turn us away from our gods?  If you are truthful, then bring upon us what you threaten us with.
  23. (They) said that God only knows (it).  And I am conveying to you what I have been sent with, but I see that you people are stuck in ignorance.
  24. Then when they saw this (torment) as a cloud (in the form of) coming towards their plains, they said, “This is a cloud that will keep raining on us.”  (Nay) Rather, (this) is that for which you used to hasten, i.e. a whirlwind full of painful punishment.
  25. He destroys everything by the order of his Lord, so they became such that nothing was visible except their houses.  We punish the sinners in the same way.
  26. And We gave them powers which you did not give to the people and gave them ears and eyes and hearts.  So when they used to deny the verses of God, neither their ears nor their eyes nor their hearts could do anything for them.  And what they used to mock surrounded them.
  27. And we destroyed the settlements around you.  And reveal (His) signs again and again so that they may turn.
  28. So why did they not help those whom these people had taken as gods other than Taqbar (God)?  Rather, they were lost (before them).  And this was their lie, and this was what they used to slander.
  29. And when We drew many of the jinn to you to listen to the Qur’an.  So when they came to him, they said (among themselves): Be silent.  When (reciting) was finished, he went back to the people of his community to advise (them).
  30. They said, O people!  We have heard a book that was revealed after Moses.  It confirms those (books) that were (revealed) before it (and) shows the true (religion) and the straight path.
  31. O nation!  Accept the word of the caller to God and believe in him.  God will forgive your sins and protect you from a painful punishment.
  32. And whoever does not accept the call to God, then he will not be able to humble (God) in the earth, nor will he have any supporters besides him.  These people are clearly in error.
  33. Did they not understand that God who created the heavens and the earth and did not get tired of creating them?  He is also able to revive the dead.  Yes, yes, He is able to do everything.
  34. And on the Day when they will be brought before the Fire (and it will be said) Is this not right?  So you will say, “Why not? By our Lord, the order will be that you who used to deny what you used to deny (in this world) will (now) taste the pleasure of the punishment.”
  35. So (O Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him), just as the Prophet (PBUH) has been patient, so be patient and do not seek haste (punishment) for them.  On the day when they will see that which is promised to them, (they will think) as if they had not lived (in the world) but for an hour and a day.  (This Qur’an) is a message.  So (now) those who were disobedient will perish.
